10 Prompts to Help You Set Intentions for the New Year

You're probably in the home stretch of last-minute holiday tasks, preparing for family gatherings and visits or maybe even some travel of your own, all while keeping the kids healthy and entertained as school lets out for break.

Maybe setting intentions is the furthest thing from your mind right now.

So, you have my full permission to flag this and come back to it next week or even after January 1st when the kids are back at school or daycare, and you have some quiet to be able to think.

But just in case you're starting to think about 2024, I wanted to share my favorite journal prompts so you'll have them to work through whenever the time is right for you.

I encourage you to make this a slow, cozy process whenever you start.

Stay snuggled up and relaxed on the couch or in bed while the kids are sleeping or watching a movie and reflect.

Use this time, not to do, but to ponder and decide.

Not to set goals, plans, or schedules, but to choose the priorities and the intentions that will make all of that easier later on.

It's why I like writing, old-school style pen-to-paper.

There's no list-making and you don't need your calendar to map things out quarter by quarter.

You just need a piece of paper, a pen, and your mind.

If you want to join me, here are the prompts I'll be using to guide my thinking.

Use one or use them all.

Just promise me that you'll take it slow. That you'll soak in this transition that is the last weeks of 2023.

There will be plenty of time in January to take action. I promise.

My 10 Favorite (updated) Journal Prompts for Reflecting at the New Year:

  • What did you learn this year?

  • What relationships have meant the most to you in the last year?

  • What are you proud of yourself for?

  • This year was a year of … / Next year could be a year of …

  • What questions do you want to answer in the upcoming year?

  • Are there any words or phrases that you want to eliminate from your vocabulary next year? What do you want to say more of instead?

  • What do you want to do less of next year?

  • If you could spend more time doing one thing this year, what would it be?

  • What would your future self tell you about how you are living your life right now?

  • Who do you want to be this next year?

Sending lots of love to you this time of year.
